Your stove is very much like a Diva. When it’s on, it needs lots of attention to keep it happy but if you allow your attention to become distracted it may burn with jealousy. That may be why Thanksgiving Day has the highest amount of cooking fires than any other day!

As you work with your Diva more often during the holiday season, keeping your venting hood, filters, and stove clean and free of grease will help reduce the risk of cooking fires.  Don’t leave your stove unattended while cooking either as a simple flare-up can become a full-fledged fire in seconds. But just in case you should also know at least 3 ways to put out a grease fire.

– NEVER use water on a grease fire.  They don’t mix and will cause it to flare out of control.

1 – Put a lid on it.  Place a lid over the pan and remove the heat source. This smothers the flames by cutting off its oxygen.

2 – Pour baking soda on it.  Yes, that handy versatile box of baking soda can also add firefighter to its long list of uses as it smothers the flames as well.

3 – Use a fire blanket to smother the flames.

4 – Use a fire extinguisher. Pull the pin. Aim the stream on the center of the fire Squeeze the trigger and move in a Sweeping action, left to right and back until the fire is out.

Sure you’ll ruin whatever was cooking but it’s much easier to replace a menu item than your manor. If at any point the fire looks to big or begins to get out of control leave immediately, close the door behind you as you exit, call 9-1-1
